Brockton Democratic Rep. Christine Canavan re-elected

BROCKTON — Democratic Rep. Christine Canavan defeated GOP challenger John Cruz to keep her seat as the state representative for the 10th Plymouth District in Brockton, Easton and West Bridgewater.

Canavan, 60, of Brockton, has held the seat for 18 years. She was challenged in this year’s race by former state Rep. John Cruz, 48, a West Bridgewater Republican who serves as Board of Health chairman in West Bridgewater.

Canavan won a total of 6,096 votes in Brockton and West Bridgewater to Cruz’s 4,533. The tally from Easton’s precinct 3 was not immediately available but will not change the outcome.

It was the third time in the ring for Canavan and Cruz.

Canavan unseated Cruz in 1992 to gain the state representative seat, and she defeated him in his bid to regain office in 1994.

Cruz, who owns a plumbing business in West Bridgewater, called for lowering taxes and said he believes in term limits.

The 10th Plymouth District includes Easton’s precinct 3; Brockton’s precincts B and C in Ward 4, precincts B, C, and D in Ward 5, and Ward 6; and all of West Bridgewater.
